The last couple of years I slowly took a step back from dancing and teaching and shifted my focus to DJing more. I started this DJ journey in 2015, playing mostly at our local parties. I wanted to provide our students with what I experienced when visiting other cities for kizomba nights or festivals, and after some urging I gave it a go. This grew into traveling for events all over, and playing private parties and events outside of the social dance scene.
I never considered myself a DJ … a REAL DJ. There were even DJs outside of the social dance scene that I followed, shadowed or worked with that told me “no, Mike you’re a DJ, just own that” – but I still hesitated. It’s taken a while, but I’m coming around haha.
If you told me 10 years ago that this is what I’d be doing I’d laugh. From trainings, lessons, privates, research – I’ve put in a lot of work in that time, and I have so much more to learn. You never stop learning. I literally have a list.
Yes, I still dance occasionally, and yes I still teach occasionally. But having played for crowds in and outside of the dance scene, I’ve found that I get the most joy out of DJing, and that’s definitely what I prefer. It can be stressful, but sitting back and watching people enjoy the music – Real Music – just makes me smile.
So if you don’t know me, I recently launched this website djdaco.com, along with this blog. I need to hold myself accountable by keeping it updated, and building more of presence, but all in due time.
Let me re-introduce myself I’m DJ D’Aço (dah-so)
